Christmas is just around the corner and our team here at Ascend Advisory couldn’t be more excited. What makes Christmas special is spending it with the people we love and creating new memories at every turn. Columbus is a city offering many family fun activities and our team wanted to put together a short list of some of our favorite Christmas destinations this holiday season from around the town and our neighboring communities.
Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
One of the most popular destinations this Christmas season is sure to be Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Bringing the joys of the zoo and Christmas together, Wildlights, is sure to be a treat your family will enjoy year after year. Different attractions at the zoo aside from the residents themselves include the Sparkling Spruce, a 42ft LED powered tree that plays light and sound displays for all ages, and The Holiday Magic around the Watering Hole show with its dazzling lights display playing every half hour. Other activities include the 12 Days of Wildlights Train Ride and the S’mores Experience where the whole family can roast their own marshmallows over a fire and enjoy the holiday cheer. Adults in the family can even sneak away to try the Craft Beer Celebration featuring different beverages to sample at the numerous tasting stations throughout the zoo.
Ohio Village’s Dickens of a Christmas
Closer to the heart of the city at Ohio Village you can find Dickens of a Christmas. Inspired by Charles Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol”, Ohio Village will bring you back in time where your family can experience the joys of Christmas in the Victorian Era. Explore the village and visit with various characters from Dickens timeless tale while also enjoying cooking demonstrations, hands-on crafts, and live music from the time. Food trucks are also available on-site for more modern tastes. The village will be open on the weekends this December through the 17th and pre-registration is required for entry.
Butch Bando’s Holiday Fantasy of Lights
Making our way back north you will find a local classic, Butch Bando’s Holiday Fantasy of Lights. Located at Alum Creek State Park Campgrounds, this drive-thru light show features over 3 miles of amazing light displays. Come see this sparkling spectacle which is sure to fill the whole family with Christmas spirit, all from the comfort of your own vehicle. For parents, have your kids bring their letters to Santa to the show where Santa’s elves will personally deliver them to the big man up north (and scan them to your email address so you can see what your little ones wished for this Christmas). A valid email address must be included. Peak show times are Friday and Saturdays so if you wish to avoid the crowds it is recommended to visit during the week.
Legendary Lights of Historic Clifton Mill
Traveling 40 minutes west of the city you can find a national treasure at the Legendary Lights of Historic Clifton Mill. For over 30 years, Clifton Mill, located in Clifton, Ohio, has celebrated the Holidays by displaying over 4 million lights illuminating the mill and the surrounding landscape. Children can even catch a sneak peak of Santa working in his workshop and loading his sleigh before the big night. Taking nearly 3 months to build annually this masterpiece comes alive for an unforgettable light display that is sure to bring wonder to all ages. Every hour all 4 million lights extinguish leaving guests in total darkness before orchestral music playing Christmas classics can be heard throughout the gorge. As the music builds lights can be seen coming alive synchronizing with the melodies.
Winterfest at Kings Island
Making our way south about an hour from Columbus is Winterfest at Kings Island. Come see all the traditions and spirit of the Christmas season plus the fun of Kings Island, one of Ohio’s premier amusement parks. Every night at 5:30pm see the tree lighting ceremony at the Eiffel Tower where it is transformed into a beautiful Christmas tree. Don’t miss the Winterfest Wonderland Parade where guests will be able to gaze at a staggering 5 million lights throughout the park as well as various holiday characters. Enjoy nine different winter wonderlands in the park featuring ice skating at the Royal Fountain, and weather dependent, a number of rides that will still be operating including the Mystic Timbers. Fans of Charlie Brown will not want to miss, “A Peanuts Guide to Christmas” or “Charlie Brown’s Christmas Spectacular” where children can help these beloved characters pick out a Christmas tree.
Christmas in Columbus is a wonderful time of the year filled with surprises at every turn. Whatever you and your family decide to do this holiday season we here at Ascend Advisory hope you have a Merry Christmas with your loved ones and are able to make it a Christmas to remember. From our family to yours, cheers.
